Slack is a cloud-based workplace messaging and collaboration platform built around organized channels, direct messaging, and third-party app integrations. It grew out of an internal communication tool at Stewart Butterfield's company Tiny Speck and launched publicly in August 2013, quickly gaining hundreds of thousands of users; by its 2019 public offering it served over 10 million daily active users across 600,000+ organizations. Salesforce acquired Slack for roughly $27.7 billion in a deal announced December 2020 and completed July 2021, its largest acquisition to date, and Slack now operates as a Salesforce subsidiary.
