Infrastructure across commerce and services
Wu joined Taobao in 2004. Alibaba’s annual report credits him with driving the architecture of its e-commerce systems and serving as a technology leader for several 11.11 shopping festivals. His responsibilities expanded through new-retail technology and local-consumer-service infrastructure before his appointment as group CTO in December 2022. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and technology from Hangzhou Dianzi University.[2][4]
Technology and organizational direction
Alibaba lists Wu among the members of its partnership committee. The committee administers partner elections and has a role in selecting the partnership’s board nominees. This places his technical leadership alongside responsibilities in the group’s governance. His work connects infrastructure used at business scale with the organization of research partnerships.[1][2][3]
Contributions
In 2024, Wu signed Alibaba’s agreement with HKUST to establish a joint laboratory on big data and AI. The collaboration planned research on language models, multimodal training and inference, computational infrastructure and system software. Joint expert committees would coordinate the projects. In his statement, Wu emphasized bringing research findings into varied business settings and developing technical talent.[3]
