Context

Two scores on the same can be difficult to compare if they use different tasks or prompting methods. ARC Prize's Verified program addresses that problem by reserving verified status for scores produced through its official process on a hidden test set. Keeping those tasks private is intended to reduce the risk of measuring memorized public examples.

The announcement also introduces an academic panel to audit the testing process as the foundation accepts donations from AI labs. ARC Prize says those donations do not affect scoring. The useful distinction for readers is between an independently administered under stated conditions and a score reported by a model's developer; the badge concerns the evaluation process, not a claim that the model has general intelligence.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • benchmark — A standard public test set for comparing AI models — the shared scoreboards behind every "model X beats model Y" claim.
  • eval — A repeatable test for AI quality — a set of tasks plus scoring — used the way software teams use test suites, because model output is too variable to judge by eyeballing.
