Claude Platform adds OpenTelemetry trace export in public beta

From the Daily Brief

Claude Platform can now emit OpenTelemetry traces for calls made through the Messages API, sessions in Managed Agents, and the Claude SDKs. Spans follow the gen_ai semantic conventions and carry token counts, the model name and tool names. By default only that metadata leaves the platform; full prompts and tool results are exported only when a team opts in, which matters for anyone with data handling rules. LangChain announced the same day that these traces flow into LangSmith in public beta, giving step-level views of agent runs without custom instrumentation. The practical change is that Claude agent traffic can land in whatever observability stack a team already runs, next to the rest of its service traces. Both announcements describe the feature as a public beta, so span shapes and attribute names may still change before general availability.

Now in public beta, Claude Platform can send OpenTelemetry traces from the Messages API, Claude Managed Agents, and the Claude SDKs to your observability stack.

Context

Anthropic's Claude Platform can now export OpenTelemetry traces, in public beta, from the Messages API, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude SDKs. OpenTelemetry is an open standard for recording what software did: a trace links the steps of one request, so a monitoring tool can show where time went or where something failed. Beta announcement.

The practical change is where that record lands. A team can view Claude activity in the observability tools it already uses for the rest of its application. The announcement does not specify what each trace contains, so exact coverage should be confirmed in Anthropic's documentation before relying on it. Announcement.
