Cloudflare adds Web Search API to AI Gateway in beta

From the Daily Brief

Cloudflare's Web Search API is now in beta as part of AI Gateway. It exposes live web search to models through two paths: a REST endpoint and a binding inside Workers AI. Search itself is served by third-party providers, and Cloudflare names Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup as the options at launch. Cloudflare says requests carry zero data retention and are billed at the provider's list price with no markup. The practical draw is placement. Teams that already send model traffic through AI Gateway get search calls in the same place, so grounding requests show up in the same logs as the completions they feed. That makes it easier to audit what an agent searched before it answered, and to compare providers without rewriting client code. The changelog entry is short, so details such as rate limits and result formats should be checked in the documentation before committing a production agent to it. It is a beta, and provider coverage may change.

Context

Cloudflare has opened a beta Web Search API that lets AI agents and applications look things up on the live web before answering, rather than relying on what a model learned before its or guessing at URLs. An app sends a query, picks a provider and says how many results it wants, and gets search results back to base its response on. According to Cloudflare's changelog, three providers are available at launch: Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup. Cloudflare says all three offer zero data retention for requests sent through Cloudflare, meaning they do not keep the queries, and all have committed to its verified bot standards for crawling websites.

The practical change is where search lives. The API runs through AI Gateway, the Cloudflare service that already logs and bills an application's AI requests, so each search appears in the same gateway logs and is charged to the same AI Gateway credits. Cloudflare says it charges each provider's list API price with no markup, and developers who already have an account with a provider can use their own API key instead. A team using AI Gateway can therefore add web search without setting up separate billing with a search company or a second place to track usage. The announcement does not compare result quality across the three providers.
