This week we're shipping our vision for the best cloud agent experience. We’re starting with an often-overlooked but critical foundation for any agent: the sandbox where it runs. Today, we’re introducing Environments, now generally available.
Context
Factory opened a week of cloud-agent releases with what it called an often-overlooked foundation: the where an runs. Its launch article defines an Environment as a reusable definition of that sandbox, made up of the repositories, tools and dependencies its Droid agents need. Factory builds each Environment into a portable image ahead of time, so the sandbox is ready before the agent arrives rather than being set up at the start of every task.
The definition is also kept current. Factory says it rebuilds Environments every few hours, validates each new build and promotes only successful ones, so a Droid never starts from a faulty environment. That matters most for Automations, Factory's recurring runs triggered on a schedule or by Slack, GitHub or webhooks: when an Automation points at an Environment, each run starts on a fresh sandbox from the last validated build. At the October 12, 2026 launch, Factory said Environments were generally available on all plans.
