Try Omarchy for Windows puts the full Omarchy Linux desktop in a virtual-machine window on a compatible Windows PC. It is worth considering if you want to learn its keyboard workflow and try real Linux applications before committing to a separate installation. Your guest files persist, but setup still means downloading a Linux image, allocating resources and possibly enabling a Windows feature with a restart.

Good fit

A Linux-curious Windows user who wants a trial to survive beyond a single session. The launcher handles QEMU, an Arch guest image and Windows integration, so you can return to configured apps and files while keeping Windows available. Clipboard and optional shared-folder integration help move work across the boundary. The first useful test is whether the desktop’s navigation and your everyday applications suit you, rather than whether a demonstration looks attractive.

Consider something else when

You use ARM64 Windows, need native hardware-performance evidence, or require NVIDIA CUDA/OptiX inside the guest. The supported host is x86_64 Windows 10 or 11 with hardware virtualization. Its virtual GPU can forward supported graphics work through Windows drivers or fall back to CPU rendering; it is not physical GPU passthrough. A booting desktop does not establish that a particular game, renderer or device works.

Start here

On a supported Windows PC, review the official release and its published signature/checksum information before opening the launcher. Choose a local NTFS or ReFS data location and the default personal-account setup. The quick-start alternative uses public credentials and passwordless guest sudo. After the desktop opens, Super+Space shows the menu and Super+K the keybindings. Start with the Balanced resource profile and one real intended task. This is the documented route; no native installation was performed for this guide.

Cost and requirements

The launcher’s original code is MIT licensed; bundled components retain their own licenses. The small executable is only the beginning: documentation describes about 2 GB of guest data plus a graphics runtime, several GiB of guest memory and a growing local disk. Disk capacity is a limit, not fully reserved host space. Port forwards, shared folders, clipboard transfer and camera/microphone settings are consequential integration choices to review before using personal work.

Limits to know

A VM backup and an export for a physical Omarchy installation serve different purposes. The documented full backup is unencrypted, can contain credentials and excludes shared Windows folders and the launcher executable. Keep a compatible launcher and confirm a restore before depending on it. Moving to a physical installation is a separate procedure that can involve partitioning and encryption settings. Some documentation describes version-specific or unreleased layouts; it does not prove every backup can restore across releases.
