OpenRouter's April 14, 2025 reveal identified Quasar Alpha and Optimus Alpha as tests of OpenAI GPT-4.1. Both aliases referred to the large model, rather than its Mini or Nano variants. The operational consequence was explicit: the free alpha endpoints were retired and requests would return a 404 error. OpenRouter did not redirect those requests automatically, to prevent unexpected costs from an existing free integration silently becoming billable.
