How To Use Agent Skils

Context

Skills package task instructions so an assistant can load detail when needed. ElevenLabs' tutorial describes a staged process: the assistant initially sees each 's name and description, loads its main instructions when relevant, and consults supporting files as the task requires. This keeps unused documentation out of the active while making specialized guidance reusable.

Selection still matters. The tutorial notes that an assistant may miss a relevant installed skill, so explicitly requesting it can help bring the intended instructions into the task. The supported mechanism is selective access to documentation; the article supplies no controlled measurement of improved task success. Usage guidance.

Key takeaways · AI-distilled
  • An Agent Skill is a folder whose required SKILL.md needs only name and description frontmatter; ElevenLabs' guide recommends keeping that file under 500 lines and putting extras in scripts/, references/ and assets/ subfolders.
  • The guide's case for Skills is context economy: only each skill's name and description load by default, the full SKILL.md loads when the agent picks it, and supporting files load only when needed, which the author contrasts with loading large structured context up front.
  • Install paths differ by tool (.cursor/skills/, .claude/skills/, .opencode/skills/), but skills are plain folders that can be copied in, or added with Vercel's skills.sh CLI via npx skills add <owner/repo>.
  • The author notes agents do not yet reliably invoke skills on their own, so naming the skill in the prompt is the practical workaround; in their test, naming ElevenLabs' speech-to-text skill produced a working example in one shot, though the UI needed work.
