About

Gemini image-generation and conversational-editing model family from Google DeepMind. The original is Gemini 2.5 Flash Image; later Nano Banana variants have different input types, grounding, reasoning and prices. Gemini consumer access and API billing are separate.

At a glance

Nano Banana is worth exploring for making and revising images through ordinary language, especially when you want to change one visual idea over several turns. It is a family of Gemini image models from Google DeepMind, rather than a separate editing application. The original Nano Banana is Gemini 2.5 Flash Image; current documentation also names Nano Banana 2, 2.1, Lite and Pro variants. Pick a specific version before treating a capability or price as a promise.

Good fit

People developing visual concepts, reference-based variations or illustrations where an approximate result can be inspected and refined. The documented workflow combines a prompt with optional reference images, then uses follow-up instructions to edit the result. Developers can request image and text output through the Gemini API and integrate the returned image into their own application. The current 2.1 model adds search grounding and thinking, while the original 2.5 model does not support those features. These are documented distinctions, not a hands-on image-quality comparison.

Consider something else when

You need exact typography, geometry, identity preservation or an authoritative factual diagram without checking every important detail. Google’s guide says the model may not follow the requested number of outputs, and recommends preparing text before asking for an image containing it. Generated output is something to evaluate, not a guaranteed production asset. If the job is a precise edit in an existing layered design, compare the effort of correcting a generated result with doing that edit directly.

Start here

Choose the actual model and access surface, such as Gemini’s image interface or the documented API model gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Begin with a non-sensitive fictional scene, specify the aspect ratio and one useful constraint, then request a single change while keeping the subject and composition. Check whether the unchanged parts remain acceptable. In an API integration, verify that the response contains image output rather than assuming a text response is the image. This is a proposed evaluation, not an image generated or edited during this review.

Cost and requirements

On 31 October 2026, the standard API table for Nano Banana 2.1 lists $1.50 per million input tokens, $7.50 for text/thinking output and $30 for image output. Its listed 1K image-output equivalent is $0.0336, with higher equivalents for 2K and 4K; input, reasoning and applicable search charges can add to that amount. Other model versions and batch processing have different rates. Gemini consumer plans and usage limits are separate from API billing. Confirm the exact account, model and output-size quote instead of estimating every Nano Banana request from one per-image number.

Limits to know

The API terms distinguish paid and unpaid services, with regional exceptions. Under unpaid terms, submitted content and responses may improve products and human reviewers may process them; paid-service terms say prompts and responses are not used for product improvement, while allowing limited safety-related logging. That is not a zero-retention promise or the consumer Gemini policy. The image guide says outputs include SynthID watermarks. No image generation, edit consistency, text accuracy, speed, API billing or consumer-plan access was tested; this recommendation is based on documented workflow and constraints.

Still unclear

  • Which image model, limits and account requirements are available in the reader’s Gemini consumer interface? This review checked developer documentation rather than an authenticated consumer generation.

Why it made the leaderboard

A candidate for visual concepts and iterative edits when outputs can be inspected and corrected. Choose the exact model and check the result instead of treating one example or per-image rate as a family-wide guarantee.
