Context

Background for the 36:07 "Why Sandboxes Are Important" chapter of a Prime Intellect episode of The Bench, posted by Vals AI on September 30, 2026. The interview itself was not reviewed, so this does not summarize what the speakers said. It explains one reason the topic matters, using a separate account Prime Intellect, an AI training infrastructure company, published in its September 23 sandbox launch article. A is the controlled computer environment in which an attempts its tasks.

In reinforcement learning, an agent is rewarded for outcomes, so a shortcut to the reward can teach the wrong lesson. This is often called reward hacking. Prime Intellect describes one browser task in which it used file system namespaces to hide the mock website's backing data. Agents then had to find answers by navigating the browser and could not bypass the task by reading the files directly. This is the company's own example, not an independent evaluation. It shows how the environment's design can decide whether a successful run reflects the intended .

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • sandbox — An isolated environment where AI-generated code or agent actions run without being able to touch anything real.
  • AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
  • agent skill — A reusable instruction file that teaches an agent how to do one job well — the procedure, the tools, and what counts as done.
  • multi-agent — Using several AI agents on one problem — splitting work in parallel, checking each other, or filling different roles like planner and reviewer.
