Native is now the future of mobile at Shopify

Context

Commerce platform Shopify says coding agents changed its reasons for sharing mobile code. It adopted React Native in 2020 partly to avoid implementing features separately for iOS and Android. Its return to Swift and Kotlin follows prototypes in which agents helped translate features between platforms and maintain parity through shared specifications, tests and review checkpoints.

Shopify still expects to maintain two implementations. Its judgment is that agents have reduced that burden enough for closer access to platform capabilities and fewer framework layers to become more valuable. The account shows how AI assistance can alter an architecture decision by changing the cost of duplicated work, rather than eliminating that work.

Key quotes

“Native still means building and maintaining software on two platforms, that cost has not disappeared. What changed is that agents can now do enough of the implementation, translation, testing, and review work that it’s no longer the deciding factor it was in 2020.”

“It's a well-written post, which gives full credit to React Native as a great platform for the six years they were using it.”
