About

WireGuard is a VPN protocol and tunnel implementation that uses modern cryptographic primitives (Curve25519, ChaCha20, Poly1305, BLAKE2) to create secure network interfaces configured via simple public-key exchange, similar to SSH. It runs in the Linux kernel for high performance and is designed to be small and auditable compared to IPsec or OpenVPN, while supporting roaming across IP addresses and cross-platform deployment on Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS, and Android.

What it can do

  • Create a secure encrypted network tunnel between devices

  • Configure secure network interfaces via public-key exchange

Why it made the leaderboard

WireGuard gives builders a minimal, auditable way to put private tunnels between servers, dev machines, and staging environments without the configuration weight of IPsec or OpenVPN. Unlike managed mesh services layered on top of it, you run it yourself with a keypair and a config file.
