Code retrieval for coding agents has a new option on OpenRouter. Voyage Code 4 from @VoyageAI by MongoDB supports Matryoshka embeddings at 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 dimensions, plus multiple quantization options. Try it: https://t.co/Ac5EoU8XtU
Context
Voyage AI's Voyage Code 4 helps coding agents locate relevant code from a description of what they need. It converts text into numerical representations that can be compared for similarity, and is available through OpenRouter. The developer's release article evaluates finding files from issue descriptions, a useful step when an knows the symptom but not the function name.
Its Matryoshka offer different storage sizes from the same representation. A longer vector contains shorter usable versions, while uses fewer bits for each stored value. Voyage Code 4 supports lengths from 256 to 2,048 dimensions. The developer's explanation of these techniques describes the tradeoff: smaller representations reduce storage and search costs, with some loss of retrieval quality.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- embedding — A list of numbers representing a piece of text's meaning, so that similar meanings end up numerically close and can be searched.
- quantization — Shrinking a model by storing its numbers less precisely — like rounding — so it runs faster and fits on smaller hardware, at a small quality cost.
