About

A collection of generative ambient instruments with a browser version, a separate handheld build and an Ensemble route. The core instruments are Voice, Synth, Mallet, World and Drums.

At a glance

Rill Sound is a collection of small generative instruments with evolving music and animated visuals, available in a browser and on Stick S3 hardware. Try the browser version if you enjoy letting a piece unfold while nudging its direction. The deliberately small controls suit exploration more than arranging a track to a detailed specification.

Good fit

Listeners curious about music made from rules, variation and repetition, and hardware enthusiasts who want to preview the idea before buying a device. Voice produces wordless singing through synthesis: its resonators shape vowel-like sounds rather than requiring an uploaded singer recording. Other modes include synthesized melodies, mallet sounds, field-recording environments and drums.

Consider something else when

You need to write lyrics, specify a complete song arrangement or assess the sound of the physical speaker from the web demo. This is a family of constrained instruments. The Voice README explicitly says the browser build uses gentler audio drive than the small hardware speaker, and the About page warns that store releases may differ.

Start here

Choose Voice, use Turn on sound when ready to listen, then try Front button for another piece and Side button for volume. Shake changes the visual without changing the music, according to the documented controls. During a muted interface trial, the displayed piece changed from Alto in D dorian at 87 BPM to Choir in F dorian at 93 BPM, and the volume control changed from 65% to 76%. This was not a listening test.

Cost and requirements

The public browser demo opened without an account, payment or hardware. Native use requires a Stick S3 and suitable firmware; the site has a waitlist for possible preflashed units. The Voice repository is GPL-3.0-or-later and supplies build instructions, but current firmware availability should be checked before planning an install. Flashing replaces the device's current firmware and settings.

Limits to know

Only the muted Voice interface and its controls were inspected. Audio quality, Record audio, the other instruments and multi-device ensemble synchronization were not tested. The maker describes hardware instruments as running without a network connection; that does not establish the browser site's complete data handling. No device was purchased, flashed or connected, and no recording was made.

Why it made the leaderboard

The browser version lets you explore instrument controls before deciding whether to try the handheld build.
