About
Hosted Git repositories and pull-request code review, with workspace-level Jira integration and optional build automation. Free storage, paid enforcement controls and scoped API access affect fit. Cloud hosting is distinct from the self-managed Data Center product.
At a glance
Bitbucket Cloud is worth evaluating when your team wants hosted Git repositories and code review connected to Jira. Git records changes to files; Bitbucket adds shared repositories, branches and pull requests so colleagues can discuss a change before merging it. Its strongest case is reducing the gap between planned work and the code that implements it. If your current host already supports that workflow, establish a specific benefit before spending time migrating repositories and integrations.
Good fit
Teams that already organize work in Jira and want repository activity connected to it. The documented connection works at the workspace level and requires administrative access and grants between the two products. For teams that need enforceable review rules, Premium adds enforced merge checks, IP allowlisting and required two-step verification. Check those plan boundaries against your actual policy; having a review screen and enforcing an approval rule are different capabilities.
Consider something else when
You need to keep source code entirely on infrastructure you operate, or want to use the free tier as storage for large binary assets. This guide covers the hosted Cloud product; Data Center is a separate self-managed offer. The repository-size guide puts Free workspaces at 1 GB of total repository storage. For Standard and Premium repositories, it describes a 2 GB warning and a 4 GB limit that blocks further additions. Large File Storage is a separate allowance, so an unlimited repository count does not mean unlimited storage.
Start here
For a documented first trial, use an account and workspace you control, choose Create, then Repository, leave the private-repository option checked and include a README. The expected result is a Source page containing that file and a commit visible under Commits. Before importing a real project, check who can see it and which review rules your plan can enforce. The Clone button supplies an SSH or HTTPS command for a local Git client. These steps were researched, not performed: no account, repository, access grant, clone or build was created for this review.
Cost and requirements
The pricing page checked 31 October 2026 lists Free for up to five users, Standard at US$3.65 per user per month and Premium at US$8 per user per month. Regional checkout and annual seat pricing were not verified. Free includes 50 hosted build minutes and 1 GB of Large File Storage; these are distinct from repository storage. Hosted automation consumes minutes weighted by runner size, including failed steps. Licensing documentation describes usage billing and organization-level pooling, with annual-plan changes starting 3 December 2026. Confirm the billing settings and extra-usage caps for your subscription rather than assuming the seat price is the whole bill. Hosting and review do not require you to adopt built-in automation.
Limits to know
Private repositories restrict visibility to authorized users; they still put source code in a hosted service. Connecting Jira creates additional access relationships, and its setup guide selects repository syncing and Smart Commits by default. Review those settings before granting access. For agents or scripts, documented scoped API tokens support Git and REST operations: repository read access is enough to clone, while pushing also needs write access. Keep credentials out of permanently saved remote URLs. A local Git clone preserves source history, but this research did not establish a complete export path for reviews, permissions, hosted configuration and large-file objects. Review ergonomics, reliability and automated access were not tested.

Why it made the leaderboard
Worth evaluating when connecting planned work to repository activity improves an existing team workflow. Check migration effort, access grants and plan-specific review enforcement before switching hosts. Research was source-only.
