About
Taco is a lossless compressor that uses GPT-2 to predict the next piece of data and a range coder to store only what the model missed. Its HardShell engine runs the model with integer arithmetic only, so every CPU and GPU computes identical predictions and a file folded on one machine unfolds byte for byte on another. The project is an alpha proof of concept and is slow, so it is not a replacement for zstd or xz.
Why it made the leaderboard
Shows that a language-model compressor can produce byte-identical output on CPUs and GPUs by avoiding floating point. That removes the usual decompress-on-different-hardware failure. Alpha and slow, so a proof of concept.
