Context
A telephone voice needs a path from incoming audio to a spoken reply. In ElevenLabs' build guide, Twilio transports the call's audio to an application server. Scribe v2 Realtime transcribes it, a writes the answer, and Flash v2.5 synthesizes the response for playback. the answer into speech synthesis lets playback begin before the entire reply is ready. The application's server coordinates these stages, so connecting the individual services is only part of building the conversation.
Terms in this piece · Glossary
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- LLM — A large language model — the neural network behind tools like Claude and ChatGPT, trained on huge amounts of text to predict what comes next.
- streaming — Sending a model's response token by token as it is generated, so the reader sees text immediately instead of waiting for the whole answer.
- token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
