Readout is a macOS beta that presents local development information in a dashboard. It is worth investigating if checking repositories and coding-agent artifacts across terminal tabs has become tedious. The public page specifies macOS Tahoe and offers version 0.0.11; this is a source-researched guide, with no installation or hands-on assessment of the native app.
Good fit
Mac developers who want an overview of existing repository, configuration and agent-session data. The policy describes reading local manifests and artifacts from Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. That supports an inspection-oriented role. It does not establish that Readout replaces an agent runner, terminal or code review.
Consider something else when
You need Windows/Linux support, a mature operational monitor or an independently verified offline privacy guarantee. The stated platform requirement excludes older macOS installations. Its own policy lists analytics, update checks, pricing-data retrieval, registry searches and optional AI requests, so local repository scanning should not be confused with a network-free application.

Check the Tahoe requirement before considering the beta download. If you choose to evaluate it after reviewing the distribution, start with a non-sensitive test repository and compare its displayed state with git status and a known agent session. That is a proposed acceptance check; this review did not download the DMG, inspect a native screen or run a scan.
Cost and requirements
The inspected official page offers a download without stating a price. Its policy says no account is required. Optional AI features use your own provider key and the provider’s terms; those costs are separate from the dashboard. The policy also says registry searches leave the app and update checks send app/macOS versions.
Limits to know
The terms say file modifications require an action you initiate and approve, but that boundary was not tested. Source research covered the current homepage and complete privacy/terms pages. Search results for other apps named Readout were excluded. Native usability, session completeness, cost estimates, permissions and actual network behaviour remain unverified.
