[AINews] How to steal a Reasoning Trace

Date

Context

An unreadable reasoning block in an exported AI session can still contain sensitive information. The research discussed by this newsletter found that some providers accepted these blocks outside their original , allowing another model in the same service to expose their contents. The paper treats such blocks as only semi-hidden, not as confidential storage.

The authors found private information in publicly shared session records and recommend removing opaque reasoning fields before publishing logs that may contain secrets. Their tests concerned services available in early July 2026; after disclosure, they reported that they could no longer reproduce the same attacks. The finding makes export contents and redaction practices consequential even when the visible conversation appears clean.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • context window — The maximum amount of text a model can consider at once — its working memory for the current conversation or task.
  • distillation — Training a small, cheap model to imitate a big one's outputs, keeping much of the capability at a fraction of the cost.
