We got local models to triage the OpenClaw repo for FREE!*

Context

A local model can help route incoming software issues without controlling the notification process itself. In the localpager implementation for OpenClaw, the model receives an issue or pull request, can inspect a repository through a restricted read-only shell, and returns structured topic labels. Fixed rules then decide which notifications to send. That division reserves model for interpreting the work and gathering . The title's cost claim assumes existing hardware and excludes electricity, and the authors built their labels with GPT-5.5 and Opus 4.8 before comparing local models against them.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • inference — Running a trained model to get answers — the phase where AI is actually used, as opposed to trained.
  • context window — The maximum amount of text a model can consider at once — its working memory for the current conversation or task.
  • eval — A repeatable test for AI quality — a set of tasks plus scoring — used the way software teams use test suites, because model output is too variable to judge by eyeballing.
  • agent harness — The scaffolding around a model that turns it into a working agent — the loop, the tools it can call, and the rules for when to stop.
