Context
OpenRouter, which sells access to many AI models through one API, agreed to join Stripe, and a podcast interview explains why fraud management matters to that business. The OpenRouter side describes stolen credit cards, traffic resold against the terms of service, hacked or compromised accounts, accounts reselling , and accidental runaway agents that run up unwanted usage, and says that anyone selling generalized inference "are a target for fraud."
That gives to the earlier acquisition announcement. OpenRouter's company statement says "there is also no one better at managing fraud and abuse." In the interview, an investor guest also forecasts that agents will drive the next wave of fraud; that is one participant's projection. The rationale is that a gateway must manage who can consume and resell computation as well as route requests to models.
- inference — Running a trained model to get answers — the phase where AI is actually used, as opposed to trained.
- context window — The maximum amount of text a model can consider at once — its working memory for the current conversation or task.
- token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
