About

Open-source typo-tolerant search. Open-source Algolia alternative with built-in semantic and vector search. Self-host or use Typesense Cloud (cluster pricing).

What it does

A search engine you run yourself or host with the vendor, built to answer queries in milliseconds even when the user misspells a word. It ships as one binary with no separate services to install, and you talk to it over plain HTTP: create a collection, push in JSON records, and query them back with filters, sorting, and facets. Recent versions also embed and compare vectors, so it doubles as a semantic and image search layer, not just keyword matching.

Why it's ranked here

This is a serious, actively engineered C++ search system, not a wrapper around someone else's engine. It builds its own indexing structure from scratch, replicates data across nodes with a consensus protocol for high availability, and layers on real features: joins across collections, scoped API keys for multi-tenant apps, and voice and image query paths using open models. The catalogue tags it as an Algolia alternative, and the source backs that framing with genuine engineering depth rather than marketing.

What's good

Typo tolerance and relevance ranking are core to the design, not bolted on. It bundles vector search, hybrid keyword-plus-semantic search, and a conversational question-answering mode over your own data in the same binary, so teams do not need separate services for each. Scoped API keys let you hand out restricted, per-tenant access safely. Deployment is a single executable or Docker container with no external runtime dependencies to manage.

Tradeoffs

The self-hosted route means compiling or running a large native C++ project with many vendored dependencies (a bundled machine learning runtime, a clustering library, a storage engine, and more), which is a heavier build and operations story than a typical web service. Storage is disk-backed but the design keeps primary structures in memory, so RAM footprint scales with dataset size. If you are not ready to run infrastructure, the vendor's own hosted cluster is effectively the path of least resistance.

How to use it well

Reach for this when you need fast, typo-forgiving search or filtering over structured records and are willing to either self-host a binary or pay for a managed cluster. It fits product search, autocomplete, and increasingly semantic or RAG-style question answering over your own data. It is not a general database: keep your system of record elsewhere and treat this purely as the query layer in front of it.

Technical notes+

The inverted index is an Adaptive Radix Tree implementation in include/art.h, with fuzzy search built directly into the tree traversal (art_fuzzy_search) rather than as a post-filter, which is how typo tolerance stays fast at scale. Documents persist through a Store abstraction backed by RocksDB per DESIGN.md, while collection metadata and lifecycle live in a singleton CollectionManager (include/collection_manager.h). Scoped, expiring API keys are modeled explicitly in include/auth_manager.h (api_key_t has actions, collections, and expires_at fields), and include/analytics_manager.h shows built-in, rate-limited search and event analytics rather than an external add-on. include/core_api.h enumerates a wide REST surface: collections, documents, aliases, presets, stopwords, synonym sets, and curation sets, all as first-class HTTP endpoints. CMakeLists.txt confirms the build pulls in RocksDB, an ONNX runtime, and a Raft-based clustering library (braft/brpc) as vendored dependencies, which is a nontrivial build-from-source footprint.
