Enhancing Goodput in Large-Scale LLM Training with Nonuniform Tensor Parallelism

Context

Nonuniform tensor parallelism aims to preserve useful training work when some GPUs become unavailable. Normally, a model's calculations are divided across a tightly connected group of GPUs. The experimental approach described by NVIDIA resumes from a checkpoint and redistributes that group's work across the remaining devices, allowing the affected model replica to keep contributing. The article explains the recovery mechanism.

The surviving GPUs must do more work, which can make their replica slower than the others. The proposal pairs redistribution with temporary power boosting where the rack has sufficient electrical and cooling capacity, and overlaps data reshuffling with other training work. Maintaining throughput therefore depends on hardware headroom as well as software reconfiguration. The design discussion describes those dependencies.
