Context

Producing more code does not automatically build an equivalent amount of understanding or trust. In the publisher's account of this Kent Beck interview, the software-development pioneer argues that engineering also develops relationships, confidence in a system and knowledge of the problem it serves.

That makes AI's acceleration of code production an incomplete measure of progress. Beck's concern is that these other forms of development may lag behind the growing codebase. His argument gives teams a more demanding question to ask about AI-assisted work: whether people understand the resulting system and can work together to change it, as well as whether they can generate it quickly.
