Reading the signals: Helping your AI-built payment integration understand business intent

Stripe's David Benchi describes a failure that a successful payment API call can conceal: the code runs, but the result does not match the business's rules. In his article on AI-built integrations, an authorization holds funds before a later browser request creates the order. Closing the tab between those steps can leave funds held without an order.

Benchi proposes stating the business rules before building, then having a separate verifier and automated tests check each build against them. One of his example rules requires every held authorization to carry an order ID in its metadata. His account comes from integration reviews, not a controlled study, and his sample rules are illustrations, not a complete test suite. He argues this makes intended behavior explicit and repeatable, while people still decide what correct means.
