About

Structured-content platform combining hosted Content Lake data with a customizable MIT-licensed Studio and a separately built frontend. Free public datasets and paid private queries have distinct access boundaries; ordinary dataset assets remain retrievable by URL. Source research, without installation or dataset use.

At a glance

Sanity is worth evaluating when the same content must serve several pages, apps or channels and editors need a tailored workspace. Content Lake stores structured documents, Studio provides a customizable editing interface, and your frontend decides how those documents appear. That separation can make content reusable. It also means you are taking on content modeling and integration work rather than buying a finished website.

Good fit

A team with development capacity and content that benefits from explicit fields, references and reusable sections. Studio’s configuration and schemas live in code, while content lives in a hosted dataset. Editors can work without changing the website’s code for each entry. The inspected defineConfig implementation returns its configuration unchanged; it is not server-side validation. Sanity’s documentation explicitly says ordinary API writes bypass Studio validation rules, so automated writers need their own checks.

Consider something else when

You want a complete site with no frontend development, a fully self-hosted content backend, or private file storage merely because a dataset is private. Studio is MIT-licensed and can be customized, but Content Lake is a hosted service. Dataset assets remain publicly retrievable by their URLs even with a private dataset; private datasets primarily restrict document queries. Confidential documents or attachments require an appropriate access design, not a paid-plan checkbox alone.

Start here

Before installing anything, model one fictional article with a title, body and related-item reference, and decide where it should appear. The repository documents npm create sanity@latest for a new project. If you choose to proceed, use a disposable dataset, check Studio validation with an incomplete entry, then confirm the published document can be queried and rendered by the intended frontend. Inspect an export before importing real content. These are proposed checks; no package was installed, project created or dataset written for this guide.

Cost and requirements

On 31 October 2026 Free included up to 20 seats, two public datasets and usage quotas. Growth was $15 per seat per month with private datasets and additional roles, plus usage charges and optional add-ons. Free Studio hosting does not include building and operating your frontend. The inspected Studio package was version 6.21.0, MIT-licensed, requiring Node 22.12 or newer and React 19.2.2-compatible peers. Hosting the editor yourself does not replace Content Lake or remove its quotas.

Limits to know

Keep write tokens out of public browser bundles and validate programmatic writes before they reach the dataset. The docs warn that private trial datasets can revert to public when the trial ends. Export provides documents and asset binaries by default, but an asset download warning can be skipped while the export still completes; a finished archive is not proof of a complete restore. The no-assets option can also remove asset references. This is a source-based assessment, without an editing, collaboration, migration, export or restore trial.

Still unclear

  • Editing fit, frontend integration effort and operating cost for the intended content model were not measured.
  • A complete export-and-restore or migration to another content system was not demonstrated.

Why it made the leaderboard

Worth evaluating when editors need tailored fields and the same content must serve several channels. The guide explains modeling effort, Studio versus API validation, hosted-backend costs, asset visibility and export completeness rather than presenting a CMS feature list alone.
