Context
Stripe has made it possible to start a Stripe Atlas application, its service for incorporating a startup, from inside a developer's own tools: either from an connected to Stripe's server, or from the terminal through Atlas commands in the Stripe CLI's tools plugin (stripe.dev). In the agent version, a founder describes what they want in plain language, for example two founders forming a Delaware C corporation, and the agent creates the application and collects company details, founder names, board seats, ownership percentages and vesting schedules. Atlas, not the agent, decides what information is required, validates each value and keeps the application's state, so an invalid website or a missing founder representative comes back as a correction the agent relays. Before each update is sent, the agent shows the values and asks the founder to confirm them.
The handoff point is deliberate. Once the application passes validation, Atlas gives a link to the Stripe Dashboard, where each founder enters sensitive identity information, reviews the formation documents, pays, signs and submits. Stripe's post says the agent can explain how Atlas represents a choice but should not pick an entity type, ownership split or vesting schedule, because those decisions carry legal and financial consequences that stay with the founders. Because the MCP server, the CLI and the Dashboard all work on the same saved application, a founder can begin in Claude Code, continue in the terminal and finish in the browser without starting over. The CLI route supports Delaware C corporations and LLCs, including applications with several founders.
- Stripe Atlas applications can now start from an AI agent through Stripe's MCP server or from the terminal via the Stripe CLI tools plugin, and both work on the same saved application as the Dashboard.
- Atlas remains the source of truth in every interface: it sets the requirements, validates each value such as a website URL, and keeps application state, while the agent collects and relays answers.
- Stripe says the agent should not choose entity type, ownership split or vesting schedule for founders, and it shows each update for confirmation before sending it to Atlas.
- Sensitive identity details, payment, document review, signatures and submission stay in the Stripe Dashboard, so the agent never submits the company on a founder's behalf.
- The CLI flow supports Delaware C corporations and LLCs with multiple founders, and Atlas requires exactly one founder to be designated as the representative.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- MCP — The Model Context Protocol — an open standard that lets any AI assistant plug into any tool or data source without custom integration code.
