Poolside's training experiment explores saving intermediate calculations in CPU memory instead of discarding and recomputing them to conserve GPU memory. On Grace Blackwell hardware, a fast connection lets these transfers overlap with other calculations, provided they finish before the saved data is needed.
Its eight-layer experiment reduced training-step time by about 4.3% compared with recomputation. The larger 6–13% improvement discussed in the article is projected for deeper models. The engineering opportunity is to exchange redundant computation for memory transfers that fit inside existing compute time; whether that exchange pays off depends on the model and hardware.
