Nvidia’s Backstop Universe – Heads I Win, Tails Who Loses?

Context

NVIDIA is backing some newer cloud companies, which rent out GPU capacity, by promising to pay for it if their customers do not. SemiAnalysis notes that NVIDIA's quarterly filing for the second quarter of fiscal 2027 introduced a $36 billion line item for AI cloud agreements. In its analysis of NVIDIA's backstops, it describes this as a six-year program in which NVIDIA backstops GPU rental contracts at a below-market rate. Participating companies seek shorter-term tenants but can always rent the capacity to NVIDIA if those contracts fall through or are not renewed.

SemiAnalysis argues the purpose is to make these clusters bankable: a committed buyer lets non-investment-grade operators borrow on better terms, and NVIDIA still sells the GPUs at full margin. The exposure is correlated. NVIDIA loses, in this analysis, only if backstopped customers cannot meet their commitments at the same time that NVIDIA's own business and cash generation slow. SemiAnalysis also says NVIDIA reportedly paused new deals under the program, so the $36 billion is not necessarily a growing figure. This is the analysts' risk argument and their reading of the filing, rather than a forecast of losses.
