Context
The software around a coding model determines what it can inspect and how quickly it learns that an edit failed. Rohit's harness essay develops this point through agent tools, including file viewers and editors with immediate feedback.
Rohit's account of the 2024 SWE-agent paper from Princeton gives a concrete example: its editor runs a linter after each change and rejects an edit that introduces a syntax error, while its file viewer and search tools limit how much material reaches the model at once. Those choices put feedback next to the action that caused the problem. They explain why evaluating a coding assistant involves its tools and interaction design as well as the underlying model.
- Princeton's SWE-agent paper measured a 64% relative benchmark improvement from redesigning the agent-computer interface alone. Same model, same task, same compute budget — the only change was how the environment presented itself.
- A is not a or an API wrapper. It is the tools the model can call, the format information arrives in, how history gets compressed, the that catch mistakes early, and the scaffolding that hands work to the next session.
- Treating the like RAM ruins agents. There is no clean selective-attention mechanism, so every irrelevant token competes with the relevant ones for attention. More context is not more understanding.
- agent harness — The scaffolding around a model that turns it into a working agent — the loop, the tools it can call, and the rules for when to stop.
- system prompt — The standing instructions a model receives before any user input — defining its role, rules, tools, and tone for the whole conversation.
- guardrails — The checks around a model that block bad inputs and outputs — filters, validators, and permission rules the model itself can't override.
- context window — The maximum amount of text a model can consider at once — its working memory for the current conversation or task.
“The model is almost irrelevant. The harness is everything.”
“The interface is not a convenience layer. For an LM agent, the interface is the mind.”
“You are not using AI wrong because you haven't found the right model.”
“The context window is actually closer to the agent's entire working consciousness for a given session.”
