About

Search and answer service that combines web results with generated explanations and citations. Offers free and paid consumer plans, plus separately billed developer APIs, SDKs and a hosted API MCP server. One public factual search returned a useful answer and mixed primary and secondary sources.

At a glance

Perplexity is worth trying when you want an explanation and a set of sources to investigate together. It searches the web and writes an answer with citations, reducing the work of assembling a first account of an unfamiliar subject. In a public search trial, it correctly distinguished what the Equal Earth map projection preserves and what a UN resolution encouraged. The useful result was a starting explanation with checkable sources; the citations still needed judgment.

Good fit

Readers comparing unfamiliar topics, checking a specific claim or finding primary material before going deeper. A focused question gives the answer a purpose and makes errors easier to spot. The trial’s source panel included an academic paper record and a UN news article, alongside secondary material. That mixture makes Perplexity useful for finding leads, while leaving the reader to decide which source actually establishes a claim. Perplexity also offers developer APIs; those are a separate way to use its search and answer services.

Consider something else when

You need an authoritative answer without opening its evidence, or already know the exact source and only need one fact from it. A convincing paragraph and a long source list do not establish completeness or accuracy. For confidential work, review the relevant consumer, enterprise or API data policy before submitting anything. The consumer training control is not an agreement that no data will be retained or processed.

Start here

Try a narrow, non-sensitive question in Search and ask for primary sources. The browser trial asked for three sentences explaining Equal Earth and whether the 2026 UN resolution banned Mercator. The response distinguished equal area from preservation of shapes or distances, and encouragement from a ban. Its source panel displayed twenty candidates; the answer was checked against primary UN material and projection documentation, not every candidate. Open the source supporting the consequential sentence and check its date, wording and scope before using the answer.

Cost and requirements

On 31 October 2026, the individual pricing page offers Free, Pro at $17 per month when billed annually and Max at $167 per month when billed annually. Those are displayed annual-billing equivalents; monthly checkout prices were not checked. Higher plans expand research, model and Computer access, with changing usage limits. Developers can choose ranked Search API results without a generated answer, or the Agent API for model responses with tools. Official Python and TypeScript SDKs are documented. API and hosted MCP calls use API billing, rather than unlimited access through a consumer subscription.

Limits to know

Free, Pro and Max accounts have AI Data Retention enabled by default according to the help center. Turning it off under Account, Preferences affects future training collection; it does not remove previously collected training data or stop processing needed to operate the service. Account data export is documented, and the deletion guide says to cancel an active subscription before deleting the account. This review tested one public Search response and its source panel. Paid research, Computer actions, connectors, private uploads, API/SDK/MCP execution and actual billing were not tested; the displayed completion time was not an independent speed measurement.

Why it made the leaderboard

Useful for getting oriented and locating evidence together. Its source panel can reduce discovery work, but important claims still need checking against the cited material.
