Life Sciences Verification Program

Anthropic's Life Sciences Verification Program gives vetted life science teams access to its models with safeguards that are more permissive for biology work. Its September 2026 announcement says applicants are reviewed for research credentials, security standards and ethical research oversight. Standard Use grants cover most biology work for a whole team; a separate High-risk Use grant covers work blocked under Standard Use, applies to a single project, and must be renewed every six months. The program launched in beta for teams and institutions, other safeguards such as cyber classifiers stay in place, and it is not available on individual plans.

The program also changes how misuse is handled. Anthropic says serious misuse can be spread across many requests and sessions, so for this traffic it is shifting from blocking each risky request in real time to offline monitoring of patterns, tied to the use cases each organization declared. Doing that requires retaining data for 30 days. When activity falls outside the stated scope, Anthropic says it flags the organization's administrators to act within agreed timeframes. The intended effect is fewer interruptions for legitimate research, in exchange for retention and organizational accountability.
