Open by design: Ai2 brings fully open AI infrastructure online with NSF OMAI

Ai2 brought new computing infrastructure online in May 2026 for NSF OMAI, the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure project it leads with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation and NVIDIA. The cluster uses NVIDIA B300 systems for model training and experimentation. Its intended research output includes reusable training data, intermediate model checkpoints and methods alongside finished models. The announcement explains this approach.

Sharing those intermediate artifacts lets other researchers inspect how a result was produced and build on experiments without repeating every training step. The project's proposed return on computing investment therefore includes the research others can reuse after an initial model release.
