Context

The independent OpenClaw Orange Book explains how OpenClaw separates conversation history from durable memory. Its memory chapter describes dated notes for recent activity and a separate MEMORY.md file for facts and decisions worth retaining. Saving information outside the conversation gives later sessions something they can read again.

This also makes memory inspectable: the files are plain Markdown that a person can open and correct. The book overstates the result when it says critical information is never lost. Its own description shows why: as a long session nears its limit, the writes what it judges important to those files, and older messages are then compressed or truncated. Anything not saved can still disappear, so the practical lesson is to check the saved record rather than assume a long conversation guarantees recall.
