Context

The independent Claude Code Orange Book recommends turning recurring project corrections into concise CLAUDE.md instructions. Its chapter on project guidance prioritizes unfamiliar build commands, testing requirements, architectural decisions, and known pitfalls. Larger reference documents can stay separate, with instructions explaining when to consult them.

That gives a new session the project's working expectations without making every task begin with an entire manual. The book treats the file as something maintained over time: add a rule when a mistake recurs, keep each rule specific, and pair a prohibition with an alternative so the is not left stuck. A recorded rule is guidance that Anthropic's Claude Code reads, so whether later work actually follows it still has to be checked.
