Context
Engineers embedded with customers should bring reusable improvements back to the product, argues Vinoo Ganesh, who describes building such teams at several companies. The example is a stalled migration between data-file formats. Observing a customer's work revealed that a data quality engineer relied on opening the old files to inspect rows; the proposed replacement would have removed her only inspection tool.
According to Ganesh's account, building a viewer removed that obstacle and the migration was approved two days later. The broader organizational point is that observing real work can reveal requirements that interviews miss. In this model, the engineer's responsibility continues beyond resolving one customer's problem: the resulting capability should become something future deployments can reuse.
