OpenRouter lets applications keep model selection in a shared server-side preset. Its preset tutorial explains that callers reference the preset's name while its configuration holds the preferred model and an ordered list of alternatives. If a model becomes unavailable, requests can move down that list; changing the preset also updates the choice for callers without redeploying each application. This addresses a different failure from one hosting provider going offline: another provider may serve the same model, but a retired model requires an alternative model. Presets centralize that replacement decision.
