A newsletter headline that reads "OpenAI shuts off Cursor" compresses a narrower event. Latent Space's AINews digest covers OpenAI's decision to end its partnership with Cursor after the SpaceX acquisition. In OpenAI's own post, the company says that under its proposal Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models would end on November 12.
The underlying decision leaves distinct access paths. A related post by thsottiaux says developers can keep using their own OpenAI API key and OpenAI's IDE extensions for Cursor. A coding editor's built-in model supply therefore depends on a supplier agreement in a way that a developer's direct connection to the model provider does not.
