Ai Rate Limiting For Voice

Context

For ElevenLabs voice generation, a requests-per-minute limit can miss the constraint that causes overload: how many requests are active at once. Its rate-limiting guide explains that generation duration varies, so the same arrival rate can occupy different amounts of capacity. A bounded worker pool on the client side addresses this by admitting only a set number of simultaneous requests.

The guide also distinguishes connection behavior. An HTTP request occupies capacity for its duration; a WebSocket counts while audio is being generated, with idle time generally excluded. For conversations with pauses, that allows capacity to serve other work between utterances. Actual capacity still depends on the workload and applicable limits.
