Mergekit Returns To Its Roots

Arcee AI announced that Mergekit, its library for combining and adapting models, would return to LGPL v3 on October 31, 2025. The company said its intervening Business Source License had created uncertainty for developers and contributors, slowing adoption through additional license reviews. The announcement presents the return to a standard license as a response to that feedback.

Arcee's explanation permits commercial and proprietary use while retaining obligations around distributing the library and modifications to it. It also says older BSL releases remain in the project's history. The change therefore concerns the license of ongoing development and subsequent releases; the announcement does not describe every historical version as relicensed.
