Copilot's Fable 5.1 turns data retention on by default

Using Fable 5.1 in GitHub Copilot carries a data-retention requirement: Anthropic retains prompts and outputs to run safety classifiers. GitHub's release notice says those retained data are not used to train Anthropic's models, and that Claude models other than Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 operate under zero data retention.

For Business and Enterprise organizations, access is a separate administrator choice: the model policy starts off, and enabling it counts as acknowledging the retention requirement. Eligible enterprise customers can get a time-bound zero-retention exception, running through the end of the calendar year while Anthropic rolls out Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, but approval does not automatically enable the model. Teams therefore need to distinguish permission to use Fable 5.1 from the data-handling terms that apply when they do.
