to me the encouraging thing to see is that capability has gone vertical while autonomous motivation mostly hasn’t. there was a 2008 "the basic ai drives" paper that predicted that sufficiently capable systems would tend toward self-preservation, resource acquisition, self-improvement and related instrumental drives. eighteen years later, models keep getting better at everything, while those drives have not manifested at all.
Reflecting on the 2008 'basic AI drives' paper, banteg notes that despite 18 years of steep capability gains, predicted instrumental drives like self-preservation and resource acquisition haven't emerged in practice.
