OpenHands (formerly OpenDevin) is an open-source platform for AI software-engineering agents that can write code, run commands, browse the web, and complete developer tasks autonomously in a sandboxed environment. It is built by All Hands AI, founded in 2024 by CEO Robert Brennan, Chief AI Officer Xingyao Wang, and Chief Scientist Graham Neubig (a Carnegie Mellon professor); the project began as an open-source, transparent alternative to Cognition AI's proprietary Devin agent. All Hands AI raised a $5M seed round in September 2024 led by Menlo Ventures, followed by an $18.8M Series A in November 2025 led by Madrona.

OpenHands 1.34.0 adds a per-conversation Docker runtime with a Settings Runtime page, automation tag filtering and editing, sandbox-aware new conversations, and a fix passing the session API key via environment.
OpenHands 1.29.0 makes agent profiles own their settings: per-profile skill selection from the server catalog, condenser and verification editing, and Model Router choice, plus backend selector and chat fixes.
OpenHands 1.28.0 adds in-chat secret requests for agents, smoother streamed output, a verify-openhands known-bug workflow, an Indonesian locale, and hides automation templates that overlap built-in integrations on self-hosted instances.
