Salvatore Sanfilippo, known online as "antirez," is an Italian software engineer and computer security researcher born in 1977 in Sicily. He created the Redis database in 2009 and served as its lead developer and "Benevolent Dictator for Life" for over a decade, with sponsorship from VMware, Pivotal, and Redis Labs, before stepping down in 2020 and returning as a Redis evangelist in 2024. He also authored the network tool hping and invented the Idle Scan port-scanning technique, and is additionally a published science fiction author.
