The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a federally funded research and development center established in 1984 and administered by Carnegie Mellon University on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it researches software engineering, cybersecurity, and AI engineering, and publishes more than 100 open-source tools, including the Pharos binary-analysis framework and the GHOSTS cyber-simulation platform. It is the only FFRDC focused specifically on AI- and software-related engineering and security.
