Harbor is an open-source container registry created at VMware China in 2014 and released publicly in 2016 as the first OCI-compliant self-hosted registry. It joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2018 and reached graduated status in 2020. Deployed at scale by enterprises including China Mobile, JD.com, and CERN, Harbor adds vulnerability scanning, role-based access control, image signing, and multi-tenant replication on top of standard container distribution.
