Home Assistant is a free, open-source home automation platform founded by Dutch engineer Paulus Schoutsen in 2013, after he began experimenting with the Philips Hue API while a visiting scholar at UC San Diego. Built on the principle that smart home software should run locally without cloud dependency and respect user privacy, it has grown into one of the world's most active open-source projects. In 2024, stewardship was transferred to the Open Home Foundation.
