Immich is an open-source project founded in February 2022 by Alex Tran, an electrical engineer who wanted a private, self-hosted alternative to cloud photo storage. Starting as a solo weekend project, it became one of the fastest-growing open-source self-hosted applications, surpassing 90,000 GitHub stars; in May 2024 the core team — Tran and co-maintainer Zack Pollard — joined FUTO, an open-source-focused organization, to work on the project full-time under its privacy-first ethos.
