Invidious is an open-source community project created by developer Omar Roth in 2018 as a lightweight, privacy-respecting alternative front-end to YouTube that scrapes video metadata directly rather than relying on Google's official API. Roth stepped down in 2020, and a volunteer team of maintainers has kept the project alive since, even after YouTube's legal team issued a cease-and-desist in 2023 that the developers elected to ignore on the grounds that they do not use the YouTube API.
